Is it really anti-Semitic to use Cid Lazarou as a real-life stand-in for the Happy Merchant? That's a complex question that hinges on whether the Happy Merchant caricature is offensive or racist or anti-Semitic (yes, one can't reasonably argue that it is not)... But would it still be anti-Semitic to replace the Happy Merchant with an actual Jew who happens to look like the image in person, a real-life incarnation of the infamous caricature? What about a non-Jew who looks like an unfortunate Jewish stereotype? Would that be more anti-Semitic? Less anti-Semitic? I mean it's hard to argue that photographs of a real person are anywhere near as racist as deliberately illustrated caricatures.

More to the point, is Cid Lazarou Jewish? He always claimed to be "Greek" [Cypriot] but I wonder... The 23andMe results on their own are inconclusive, though they suggest that he might not be a "typical" Greek-Cypriot and that his paternal haplogroup belongs to the same branch as the Cohen modal haplogroup. The MyHeritage results are more damning but they are second-hand. DISCUSS!
